Chapter Six

Pieces of the giant slid to the floor with wet thumps, his face was frozen in a mask of shock until that too separated and landed amongst the pile of gore. The crowd was silent for what felt like an eternity as the giant's soul slithered from the mess and hovered above it. Amara stepped forward and beckoned Gideon with a crooked finger. His legs pulled him forward without his permission. He stood by her side, watching the steam rise from the bloody mess, his eyes avoiding the soul floating above it, wordlessly screaming.

"Reap, Gid." Amara crossed the space between them to place her hand on his shoulder, "Call upon the power that resides inside of you. Accept your fate as a soul collector for Lucifer himself!" Amara encouraged. Gideon felt a rumbling in his chest as he looked up at the glowing, blue soul. "Reap!" Amara yelled and the throng of people moved back several paces. His form wavered, something crawled under his skin, but nothing happened. "Pussy." Amara pushed past him, a long black scythe in her hand. It sliced through the giant's soul, and a bright flash of light almost blinded everyone watching. "You'll have to do better than that, ex-angel, don't make me use this on you." Amara wiped the weapon on a random person's shirt and then disappeared into the crowd. Gideon followed, he didn't know why, but his whole being seemed to be drawn to Amara, not in the same way he was with Avery, but it was just as soul deep.
